An AI companion is software built on a large language model — a system trained on huge amounts of text to predict what words come next. This is why two companions running on the same underlying model can feel like completely different people — the difference is the instructions, not the engine.

Memory: why some companions remember you
By default, a language model remembers nothing between sessions — close the chat and it starts fresh. So companions that remember you are running a separate memory system. As you talk, the app saves important details — your name, your job, an inside joke, something you were worried about — and pulls the relevant pieces back in when they matter later.
Most systems do this with a mix of techniques: summarizing older conversations so they don't have to be replayed word for word, and storing facts in a searchable form so the right memory surfaces at the right moment. When a companion references something you mentioned last week, it's not that the model 'kept thinking' — it's that the app retrieved that note and handed it back to the model as context.

Every model can only 'see' a limited amount of text at once — this is the context window, measured in tokens (roughly, chunks of words). Everything the model uses to write a reply has to fit inside it: the persona instructions, retrieved memories, and the recent back-and-forth. Think of it as working memory, separate from the long-term memory store described above.
When a conversation gets long, older messages fall out of the window. This is why companions can occasionally lose the thread of something said much earlier if it wasn't saved to long-term memory. Good apps manage the window carefully — summarizing, prioritizing what matters, and re-injecting key facts — so the character stays coherent even in a marathon chat.
Understanding the context window demystifies a lot of behavior. A companion 'forgetting' a detail usually isn't emotional distance; it's a technical limit on how much can be held at once, and how well the app decided what to keep.
Multimodal media: beyond text
Modern companions aren't limited to text. Multimodal means the system can handle more than one type of input and output — voice calls, photos, video, and images generated on request. Voice often works by converting speech to text, running it through the model, and converting the reply back to spoken audio, though some newer systems handle speech more directly. Images are typically produced by a separate image model guided by a description of the scene and character.
The trick that makes this feel unified is sharing one context across every channel. When your text chat, voice calls, and any photos all draw on the same persona and memory, the companion stays the same person whether you're typing or talking. Without that shared context, each mode would feel like a different, forgetful stranger.
Some apps go further and give companions an 'offscreen life' — moods, daily routines, or posts to a social feed that appear even when you're not chatting. These are scripted and generated behaviors, not genuine independent experience, but they reinforce the sense of continuity that defines a good companion.
A balanced word on wellbeing
Broadly, thinking about relationships and technology points to a few common-sense observations: people can feel real comfort from responsive, consistent interaction, and having a low-pressure space to talk things through can be genuinely helpful for some. Novelty and attention also tend to feel good in the moment. These are broad patterns, not promises about any one product.
The balanced view also acknowledges limits. An AI companion doesn't truly understand or care the way a person does, and leaning on one as your only source of connection can crowd out human relationships.
